May 15, 2006 15:03 - Anglesey town twins with Gambian village

The town of Amlwch on the north Anglesey coast has just twinned with the Gambian village of Sankwia.
According to the Holyhead Mail, there were special ceremonies officially declaring the twinning held at the same time in Amlwch and Sankwia.

This follows on from an earlier visit to Anglesey from members of the community in Gambia. Both communities hope the relationship will strengthen ties between their people and act as a catalyst for sustainable development of Sankwia.

Two leaders from the African village attended the recent celebration in Amlwch. During their week stay on our island, Ebrima Fofana and Cherno Kanyi visited local schools, Amlwch port and nearby Parys Mountain.
Building on these ties, members of the local community will visit Sankwia this autumn to see the progress of the regeneration projects, funded by a local Amlwch charity.

As town mayor Cllr Maurice Hutchinson said: "It was a real eye opener to hear how people lived in The Gambia..........This is just the start of the whole process and we will now build on what we have begun. It will be very exciting."
