Jul 2, 2009, Rio Tinto Rejects £50 Million Support Package

Any hopes that workers at the Anglesey Aluminium Metal (AAM) outside Holyhead had of saving their jobs seemed to have been dashed following a strategic decision by Rio Tinto to proceed with smelter closure this September.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson had co-ordinated a rescue package worth up to £50 million which would have tied over the smelter until its own biomass plant started generating electricity in four years time.

The package would have come from both Westminster and Welsh Assembly governments, and would have safeguarded around 540 jobs.

Local MP Albert Owen was very disappointed with the decision after having put in enormous efforts to find a solution to the problem.

It now seems that even with £1 million support a week the company were not prepared to keep the plant open. Managing Director of AAM said the amount offered was not enough in the circumstances.

Now it seems that 80 jobs will be saved for a much reduced re melt operation on the site.
