Marianglas Old School Hall, Anglesey

Marianglas Old School, together with the School House, was built in 1845, the second purpose built “British School” to be built on Anglesey.

When it closed towards the end of the nineteenth century the local community welcomed the opportunity to take charge of the building as a Community Hall.

For over a century it has remained a centre for village activities under the management of a committee of local people.

Due to enthusiastic local support and the hard work of committees throughout this time, many improvements have taken place whilst every effort has been made to keep the original appearance of the building.

Four years ago, with the aid of grants from Welsh Arts Council, Anglesey County Council grant to voluntary organisations and local efforts, new curtains with blackout linings, coupled with an efficient sound system and a much needed new piano, were acquired.

This year a new wing housing a toilet block with facilities for the disabled together with a store room, was added to the building.

This was made possible thanks to grants from the Community Facilities and Activities Programme through the Welsh Assembly Regeneration Unit and Medrwn Môn’s Key Fund together with funds raised by the Committee.

A meeting was held at the school on Thursday 10th May chaired by Councillor W J Williams when the many who had supported the committee in their efforts were invited to attend to view the alterations.

After the meeting guests enjoyed refreshments provided by the ladies of the committee and the wives of the members.

The Old School Hall is available to hire for private events and enquires should be directed to Olwen on 01248 851251.
