Benllech Flower Club Celebrates Silver Anniversary

What were you doing 25 years ago?

This was the question posed by Chairman Jenny Markanday as Benllech Flower Club celebrates its Silver Anniversary.

For most of us it was a trip down memory lane, but for three ladies present it recalled the beginning of a new venture.

Tulips

25 years ago the late Phyllis Husband, a lady who many older readers will remember with affection, decided that the Benllech area was in need of a flower arranging society.

Phyllis and a group of her friends were already members of the, now disbanded, Isle of Anglesey Flower Club who met at Menai Bridge.

There was surely room for two on the island?

The Club’s first venue was Moelfre Library so the new club was named Moelfre & District Flower Club. The inaugural meeting was held on 15 March 1982 with Margaret Stromberg officiating.

Under the chairmanship of Phyllis Husband the handful of members worked hard to get the club off the ground, holding in-house demonstrations, workshops, fund raising teas and coffee mornings.

In 1994 the now established club moved to Benllech, met in St Andrew’s church hall once a month, changed its name to Benllech Flower Club, and soon became an affiliate member of the National Association of Flower Arranging Societies.

Following the completion of the new Community & Ex-Servicemen’s Hall, the Club moved to its present location where the excellent facilities are the envy of many of our professional demonstrators.

The club now has over 50 members and is flourishing.

Our demonstrator for this special event was popular Sionedd Hughes from Oswestry. Sionedd is a gifted raconteur as well as a brilliant flower arranger.

In front of some of the ‘great and good’ in flower arranging circles, including Area President Kevin Gunnell and Chairman Sue Davies, Sionedd chats away about her life as a farmer’s wife.

It's as if you were sitting at her kitchen table enjoying a cup of tea, when suddenly you realise she has created the most wonderful and sophisticated flower arrangement.

It is a talent any demonstrator would kill for.

Sionedd’s theme was ‘Time for a Party’ and there was certainly a party mood in the hall that evening.

Each guest was offered a glass of wine on arrival which also gave club members an opportunity to meet representatives invited from other clubs in North Wales.

After the demonstration the birthday cake was cut by Wyn Senior who had been club secretary for many years.

In a second cause for celebration Vice President (and founder member) Barbara Tudor was presented with a bouquet to mark her 90th birthday.

Flower arranging is definitely good for you. Benllech might be the smallest club in our NAFAS area but we certainly know how to put on a good show!
