Banana Girl by June Roberts of Moelfre
Here we feature an article about Banana Girl, a book by Moelfre author, June Roberts.
This work, according to June, is the realisation of a life's ambition, and the author has recently launched the book on Anglesey.
Perhaps Banana Girl will turn out to be the first of other works by June Roberts. We await with interest.
Realising an ambition can be an exciting and very satisfying achievement.
These are some of the emotions felt by a local lady, June Roberts of Moelfre, on the recent publication of her first book.
Banana Girl catalogues the events of her life from age 3-20 years.
Born the eighth child in a family of nine children, June recounts her memories of the day of her mother's funeral, when the four youngest children were placed in the care of Dr Barnado's Home.
Barely three years old and deeply traumatised, June went on to live at ten different addresses before the age of six, when she was fostered by a permanent family.
At the age of sixteen, June left school and was told by her foster mother that it was time for her "to stand on her own two feet."
With no family to turn to, Dr Barnado's invited her to return to one of their children's homes, where she began her training as a nursery nurse.
At the age of eighteen, June joined the RAF, and was posted to Egypt during the Suez crisis, and later flown to Iraq.

Some months later, recuperating from illness in the mountains of Northern Turkey, an accident left her critically injured with a broken neck.
A dramatic rescue ensued, with the late King Feisal of Iraq giving his permission for his helicopter and pilot to be used in the rescue.
June is now aged 72, but shows an impressive memory for detail of these early, traumatic years.
"You should write a book" was a familiar exclamation to June, as she recounted the tales of her interesting past.
Many years of researching, note writing, and finally writing her autobiography, ensure a legacy for future generations of June's family.
Although humbled by all of the attention, June proudly signed copies of her newly published book at its launch last month, amongst some of her many family and friends.
She was also invited to speak to children at Ysgol David Hughes, Menai Bridge, and although nervous, took the opportunity to encourage the class to explore, learn and enjoy the pleasures of the written word.
Copies of the book at a cost of £8 may be obtained by contacting June's daughter on maglin27(at)hotmail(dot)com or direct from the publishers for £10.50: Trafford Publishing.
They are also available from the Post Office in Moelfre.
